Heat protectant is not permission to use unlimited heat. Use the lowest effective temperature, work carefully and avoid repeatedly passing over the same section.
Why heat protection matters
Blow-dryers, straighteners, curling tools and other hot tools can place stress on the hair. A suitable heat-protection product can help reduce that stress when used as directed.
Use heat more intelligently
- Apply heat protection according to the product instructions.
- Make sure the hair is at the correct dryness level for the tool you are using.
- Use the lowest temperature that gives you the result you need.
- Work in manageable sections so you do not repeatedly go over the same hair.
- Give fragile, coloured or lightened hair extra consideration.
Heat protection for fine hair
Fine hair can become weighed down by heavy products, so look for a heat protector that suits the texture. More product is not always more protection.
Danielle’s professional tip
If your ends feel progressively rougher even though you use heat protectant, look at the whole styling pattern: temperature, number of passes, frequency, brush tension and how much moisture the hair is retaining.
