Can split ends actually be repaired?

Products can make split ends look and feel smoother for a while, but once the hair fibre has split, a trim is the only way to remove that damaged end.

A serum, mask or conditioner can temporarily smooth a split end. It cannot permanently fuse the hair fibre back together.

What products can do

Conditioners, masks, oils and serums can reduce roughness, improve slip and make damaged ends look neater. That can be very useful, but it is cosmetic support rather than a permanent repair of the split itself.

When a trim helps

If the ends are repeatedly catching, splitting higher, looking thin or making detangling difficult, removing the damaged portion can help the hair look fuller and feel easier to manage.

How to reduce more splitting

  • Use heat protection when heat styling.
  • Avoid dragging brushes through knots.
  • Condition the areas that feel dry.
  • Be gentle with wet hair.
  • Keep regular trims appropriate to your style and condition.

Danielle’s professional tip

Do not judge a product only by whether it makes damaged ends feel silky on day one. Look at whether your whole routine is reducing friction, heat and repeated breakage over time.
